We’d love to see you at your local Big Latch On – Friday 12th April at Helensville Tennis Club.
March 20, 2024 11:00 amWhy should you attend – the benefits of breastfeeding with others.
Running for almost 20 years, the Big Latch On is back and just around the corner!
Over three days – between Friday 12th and Sunday 14th April – breastfeeding women worldwide will unite and gather in registered venues – and online – with the aim to “protect, promote and support breastfeeding families”.
We know that breastfeeding together works! In fact, establishing breastfeeding support groups is one of the WHO and UNICEF’s “ten steps to successful breastfeeding”.
Without support, breastfeeding can feel like a lonely and challenging experience. The Big Latch On was created to raise awareness, normalise breastfeeding, and foster connection in a fun and supportive way.
You’re part of a global breastfeeding community.
How great is it to be reminded that you’re not alone – and instead you are part of a thriving global community?
Last year, 158 venues worldwide held Big Latch On events and there were 3,872 participants.
The Big Latch On started in New Zealand in 2005 and is an initiative from the organisation, Women’s Health Action – whose mahi supports the health and wellbeing of women through health promotion, advocacy, and resources.
In previous years, the Big Latch On coincided with World Breastfeeding Week in August, but after Covid, it was moved to April to avoid the colder months and winter bugs.
You are welcome.
While the focus is on breastfeeding, we understand that exclusive breastfeeding is not possible for everyone. This event is designed to be as inclusive as possible and to acknowledge that all forms of feeding are valid.
If you want to attend, you are very welcome to. The organisers encourage you to participate whether you’re a: “breastfeeding/chestfeeding/mixed-feeding/formula-feeding parent, whānau, or supporter”.
All you need to know about your local event!
This year, Helensville Birthing Centre will host a FREE Big Latch On event on Friday 12th April at the Helensville Tennis clubrooms. Join other breastfeeding parents in a celebration and acknowledgement of your feeding journey.
At this family-friendly event, we foster a safe, fun, accepting and nurturing space where you can connect with other families in our community, make new friends, and receive support from local services. Bring along your partner, or other whānau for support – your older tamariki are also welcome.
We’ll look after you.
We’ll have lactation consultants and LMCs (lead maternity carers) on hand to offer support and encouragement and to answer your questions.
Enjoy a delicious morning tea and the chance to win one of several spot prizes kindly donated from local businesses and individuals in our community.
Come along whatever stage you’re at in your breastfeeding journey – whether you’re just starting out, six months in, or have been breastfeeding for years.
